When does your bra fit well? How to check the fit

Constricting straps, a band that rides up, or cups that gap: many women recognize these problems, but do not always realize that the fit of their bra may be the cause. With a few simple checks, you can discover whether your bra still fits properly and which size or model might suit you better.

When does a bra fit well?

A bra fits well when the band stays firm and horizontal, the cups fully enclose your breasts, and the shoulder straps do not pinch. In an underwire bra, the wires fit around the breasts without pressing into the breast tissue. The bra stays in place when you move and feels supportive, without pain or uncomfortable pressure.

Check these five points to assess whether your bra fits correctly:

  1. The band sits horizontally and firmly around your body.

  2. Your breasts fit completely into the cups.

  3. The cups lie flat against your skin and do not gap.

  4. The center gore fits snugly.

  5. The wires lie around the breasts and do not press into the breast tissue.

  6. The shoulder straps stay in place without digging into your skin.

  7. The bra stays in place when you move.

1. The band stays horizontal

The band forms the foundation of the support. It should sit firmly around your body and remain at approximately the same level at the back as it is at the front. Does the band crawl upward toward your shoulder blades? Then the band size is likely too large, or the bra has lost its elasticity.

With a new bra, it is best to use the outer, loosest hook. This allows you to tighten the bra later when the material becomes slightly more supple from wear.

How tight should a bra band be?

The band must fit firmly, but you should be able to move and breathe normally. The band should not pinch painfully, roll up, or cause deep indentations. A bra is meant to provide support primarily from the band, not exclusively from the shoulder straps.

2. The cups fully enclose your breasts

Your breasts should fall completely into the cups. No breast tissue should bulge over the top or along the sides of the cups. If you see a ridge or bulging above the cup, the cup size may be too small or the shape of the bra may not be suitable for your breast shape.

For larger cup sizes, a well-enclosing fit is especially important. If necessary, take a look at our range of plus-size bras, which offers various models and fits for fuller breasts.

3. The cups do not gap or wrinkle

A cup should sit smoothly against the breast. Does the top of the cup gap or do wrinkles form in the fabric? Then the cup might be too big. It is also possible that the shape of the cup does not align with the shape of your breasts.

A gapping cup does not automatically mean that you always need a smaller size. Try a different bra model as well, because the depth and shape of the cups vary per model and brand.

4. The center gore fits snugly

For many underwire bras, the center piece between the cups should lie flat or almost flat against the breastbone. Does this part stand out clearly from your body? Then the cups may be too small or too shallow.

For some breast shapes and bra models, the center piece may fit differently. Therefore, always use this point in combination with other indicators to assess the fit.

5. The wires do not press into the breast tissue

The wires should enclose the breasts and lie on the body around the breast tissue. They should not press on the breast, poke into your armpits, or push painfully against the breastbone.

If a wire pokes or chafes, the size may be incorrect or the shape of the wire may not suit your body. Would you rather not wear an underwire? Then check our available non-wired bras. A well-designed non-wired model can provide support without a hard wire under the cups.

6. The shoulder straps do not pinch or slip off

Shoulder straps help keep the bra in place, but should not carry most of the weight. Are they digging into your shoulders? First, check if the band is tight enough. When the size is too loose, the straps are sometimes tightened extra to compensate.

If the straps keep slipping off, they may be adjusted too loosely. The position of the straps or the shape of your shoulders can also play a role. Adjust both straps individually, as your body does not have to be completely symmetrical.

7. The bra stays in place when you move

A bra may seem to fit well while standing still, but still shift during movement. Therefore, lift your arms above your head, rotate your torso, and bend forward a few times. The band should remain in place and your breasts should stay within the cups.

Does the bra slide up, do the cups move with you, or do you have to adjust the bra regularly throughout the day? Then the band size, cup size, or model may not be a good fit.

How do you know if your bra doesn't fit well?

The following signs may indicate an incorrect bra size or a model that does not suit your body well:

  • The band rides up at the back.

  • Your breasts spill over the top or sides of the cups.

  • The cups gap or show wrinkles.

  • The center piece stands far away from the breastbone.

  • The wires poke, chafe, or press on the breasts.

  • The shoulder straps dig in or slip off regularly.

  • The bra shifts when you move your arms.

  • You have to adjust the bra frequently throughout the day.

How do you know if your cup size is too small?

Your cup size may be too small when breast tissue bulges over the cups, the wires lie on the breasts, or the center piece does not fit properly. A pinching sensation around the cups can also point to this.

Keep in mind that a cup that is too small can make the band feel tighter. It may then seem like you need a larger band size, whereas a larger cup might solve the actual problem.

How do you know if your cup size is too large?

A cup can be too large when the fabric wrinkles, the top edge gaps, or your breasts are not sufficiently enclosed by the cup. However, the shape of the model can also be the cause. A bra with the correct size but a less suitable cup shape can also leave empty space.

Therefore, if possible, compare several models in the same size before concluding that you need a smaller cup.

What are sister sizes?

Sister sizes are bra sizes with approximately the same cup volume, but a different combination of band size and cup letter. If you go one band size smaller, you generally choose one cup size larger to maintain a comparable cup volume. For example, you would go from an 80D to a 75E.

Is the band of a bra too loose, but the cups fit well? Then a sister size with a smaller band and larger cup letter may provide a better fit. Would you like to know more about sizes and cup volumes? Then read how to measure your bra size.

Can your bra size change?

Your bra size can change over time. Fluctuations in weight, hormonal changes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and changes in the shape of the breasts can affect the fit.

A bra itself also changes due to regular wear and washing. Materials can become more supple over time, causing the band to fit less firmly. Therefore, regularly check how your bra fits again, even when you have been wearing the same size for a long time.

The right bra is more than just the right size

Two bras in the same size can fit differently. The height of the cups, the width of the wires, the position of the shoulder straps, and the materials used vary per brand and model. Your breast shape and personal preference also determine which version fits comfortably.

Therefore, do not only look at the size label, but at the entire fit. Compare different models within the collection of bras and pay attention to how the band, cups, wires, and straps work together.

Find a bra that really suits you

A well-fitting bra provides support without pinching, stays in place while moving, and fully encloses your breasts. Do you notice that your current bra rides up, gaps, or presses into your skin? Then check your size again and try a different model if necessary.

Esterella is happy to help you find a bra that matches your body and needs. With attention to size, breast shape, and wearing comfort, you can choose a model in which you feel comfortable all day long.
